The Problem

Individuals who are solely committed to maintaining their existing healthy habits, without actively pursuing specific health goals, are less inclined to use or continue using online platforms designed to support them in enhancing their health. This reluctance can stem from factors such as time constraints, convenience, and a lack of motivation.

The Solution

CoreHealth is an online platform for users to effortlessly monitor and create tasks, goals, and habits, access additional resources and programs related to diet and exercise, and connect with a broader community for further support and accountability. It serves as a comprehensive solution for users at any stage of their wellness journey, promoting a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle.

Research

I started with research, which allowed me to deepen my understanding of what individuals need, what they found helpful in managing their health, what the company could offer to meet those needs, and what is already established in the health and wellness market.

Research Goals

  • Research the current market and audience of diet & exercise companies.
  • Determine what platforms users utilize if any for assistance in their health.
  • Identify user motivations for having a healthy lifestyle.
  • Discover user pain points that prevent or stop their use of a health platform.

Research Methodologies

  • Competitive Analysis
  • User Interviews
  • User Surveys

Competitive Analysis

I researched four different competitors in the marketplace offering similar services related to diet and exercise to assess how they meet their target customers' needs and address pain points. With exercise and nutrition platforms on the rise, it can seem like a daunting task, but this helped me identify any missing features that could add further benefits to the user. It also allowed me to see any potential design patterns to adopt or avoid.

User Interviews

After conducting the competitive analysis, I moved on to conducting interviews with individuals to discover common patterns, understand user problems, and compile statistics around their behaviors regarding their overall well-being. This allowed me to empathize with their needs, complications, and expectations.

Define
During this phase of the process, my main objective was to synthesize the findings of my research by creating affinity maps, point of view statements, How Might We statements, and user personas to focus on during the rest of the design process.

Top Point of View Statements

01
I would like to explore ways to help family-oriented individuals stay aware of their healthy habits without spending too much time inputting information, as they don’t have a lot of time for activities outside of work and family life.
02
I would like to explore ways to help busy individuals find like-minded individuals near their location to share goals, create groups, plan meetups to improve health, and help them succeed because it can be challenging to balance healthy choices with having a social life.

How Might We...

01
How might we keep users aware of their habits with as little time and steps as possible?
02
How might we make tracking behaviors quick and efficient?
03
How might we provide users with a sense of community?

Ideate
This phase is when I transitioned from learning about CoreHealth's possible users and their challenges to developing solutions that will make CoreHealth a success. I Developed a feature roadmap, site map, and task flows to guide design solutions!

Feature Roadmap

I compiled a list of different features that CoreHealth should include on their platform to compete in the field and to reach its business goals.

Task Flows

In order to help users achieve their goals, I prioritized key tasks and created user and task flows that outlined the necessary steps to complete the actions.

Style Guide

Create the logo for CoreHealth and a style tile to communicate the visual brand feel for the overall platform.

High Fidelity Wireframes

Once the style was established, I designed the high-fidelity wireframes outlining how users will navigate the features and content, as well as capturing the intricate details and visual aesthetics of the final product.

Test
It was time to bring the design to life and create prototypes for two of the task flows:
01 - Completing a daily task
02 - Joining a group through selecting a category
To determine the success of the design I recruited 8 participants and conducted usability test either in-person or through Maze.
01 - No errors and all participants completed the task in under 5 seconds.
02 - Averaged 1-2 errors, completed task in 60 seconds or less, and most participants needed further explanation of how the task was supposed to be completed.

Priority Revisions

01
Added a second button to complete a task in the task dropdown for those new users who might not know they need to click the top left empty circle.
02
Added a quick notification message to inform users that their task was successfully completed so they wouldn’t have to scroll to the completed section to see if it was successful.
03
Redesigned the community section to limit confusion and improve user experience by renaming the community section to 'Groups' and allowing users to create challenges within groups rather than having it separated.

Final Prototype

Next Steps

After making the priority revisions to the prototype based on the initial feedback from users, the next steps would be to test the prototype again to validate the updates with the users and ensure that it meets their needs and matches their expectations of a platform aiming to help users with a healthy lifestyle. Once the process is complete and all the screens are designed for the platform, I would hand this off to developers to start building the product, and I would assist with any follow-up questions.

Final Thoughts

Designing CoreHealth has significantly enhanced my UX/UI skills and deepened my understanding of creating responsive website designs. This project was particularly rewarding and engaging as I focused on crafting a platform that is not only usable and accessible but also enjoyable. Through this experience, I have reinforced the value of implementing proven design solutions to address common usability challenges and the importance of a robust project plan.
